DESCRIPTION:Begin the night with first-generation farmers\, Joe & Nikki Tyson\, as they show you their sheep\, goat and cattle AMP (adaptive multi-paddock) Grazing system. They will discuss their conversion of cropland to pasture\, incorporation of both warm and cool season species\, demonstrate their portable fencing equipment and the use of livestock guardian dogs on their farm. \n\n\n\nFor the second half of the night\, we will travel a few miles north to learn from Meghan Filbert & Omar de Kok-Mercado\, who are utilizing Nofence\, a virtual fencing system\, with goats and rams to control invasives in areas that previously did not have livestock due to the inability to fence. They will give an overview of how this new technology works and explain connectivity in the hills of the driftless.

At each pasture walk\, cohorts of 35-40 students will learn principles of managed grazing and actively participate in pasture measurement\, sizing a paddock\, and calculating pasture forage availability. Tom and his wife Linda have owned this farm since 2010 and the land has been in the family for over 100 years. This year\, they have 20 cow-calf pairs\, 50 steers and heifers\, and 2 bulls. \n\n\n\nOPEN TO THE PUBLIC! While this pasture walk series is designed for natural resources students\, all events in the series are open to the public! These events are free of cost and no registration is required to attend!

SUMMARY:Field Day Potluck: Pork on the Prairie at Dorothy's Range
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Dorothy’s Range for a thoughtful\, on-the-ground exploration of how farming and ecological restoration can work in harmony. Our host April Prusia raises pigs which are pastured seasonally behind electric fencing and are fed local organic feed\, while her partner Steve focuses on the ecological restoration of Erickson Creek (a trout stream that runs through the property)\, oak savanna\, and a diverse restored prairie on the property. April and Steve work together so that the farm can both be a productive heritage hog operation and create thriving habitat for rare songbirds and diverse wildlife. The land hosts numerous insects and rare songbirds\, with the Bobolink being one of April’s favorite. Her motto is “Bacon and Bobolinks!” Some of the infrastructure they have installed includes water diversion from the barn gutters away from the barn yard\, solar panels\, and barn upgrades funded by a grant from Frontera.  \n\n\n\nThis event is a learning circle gathering and tour\, with a Potluck Meal. Please bring a dish to share.  \n\n\n\nTHIS WILL BE A NO-WASTE POTLUCK. Please bring a plate\, mug\, and silverware for yourself. We will compost on site. \n\n\n\nParking is VERY limited and tricky\, so the event will be limited to 40 people. SUMMARY:Pasture Walk at Anathoth Community Farm
DESCRIPTION:The NW Wisconsin Graziers Network\, GrassWorks\, and UW-Madison Extension invite you to a multi-enterprise pasture walk hosted by Anathoth Community Farm. This educational event will emphasize using hay to enhance soil fertility\, pollinator pasture and habitat\, multi-species grazing for meat production\, farm to food bank sales\, regenerative agriculture and watershed protection. \n\n\n\nThe Anathoth Community Farm is home to Mike Miles\, Barb Kass\, and their extended family. They raise fully pastured beef\, poultry\, and pork and partner with the St Croix Valley Food Alliance and St Croix Food Bank to make “farm to food bank sales”. Learn more about this and how it benefits both farmers and the community.  Lunch will be provided after the farm tour. \n\n\n\nThe farm consists of about 60 acres on gently rolling lighter soils with pastures and wooded areas. Using temporary polywire fencing and portable animal paddocks\, Miles moves animals up to three times per day\, thereby creating better soil health\, water infiltration and diversified animal nutrition. Short term high stocking density grazing\, out-wintering beef cattle and bale grazing will be discussed along with answering any questions from pasture walk participants. \n\n\n\nThe farm has established key-line swales to harvest melted snow and rain water run-off which could otherwise cause erosion. The swale borders are planted with various perennials both trees and shrubs.  Forages are grown in the alleys.  Silvopasturing include both partial clearing for grazing and establishment of trees in existing pastures. \n\n\n\nA newly developed 2.5acre pollinator pasture is being established with a grant from the Xerces Society will be discussed.  The farm features rotational beef grazing\, pastured poultry\, layers and broilers\, pastured hogs\, and solar power that supplies electricity to the grid.  The farm also uses a three-point\, no-till seeder to inter-seed forage mixes and cover crops in heavy use areas.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Wisconsin Agroforestry Demonstration Farm Network at our summer field days! \n\n\n\nAt this silvopasture-focused field day\, Jay and Ivan of Wisconia Nova Farms will explain their system of running cows and sheep through their diverse tree and shrub plantings. \n\n\n\n10-11:30am: Introductions and Farm Tour \n\n\n\n11:30am-12:30pm: Lunch \n\n\n\n12:30-2pm: Deep Dive Workshop \n\n\n\nCost: $12 (lunch included) \n\n\n\nThe registration fee will be used to provide travel stipends for farmers to attend the event.
