SUMMARY:Getting Started with Stewardship – Field Day
DESCRIPTION:Calling all new and prospective landowners\, and anyone getting started with land stewardship in Wisconsin. You are invited to the Sauk County Farm on Saturday\, July 19th\, to connect with peers and conservation professionals. We are coming together to look at conservation in action and discuss ways to achieve your goals for your land. \n\n\n\nMany resources are available to help landowners\, but finding the specific people and programs to help manage your unique property is not always easy.  Whether you’ve got questions about farmland\, forests\, water\, wildlife\, prairies or pollinators…. we’ll have people to help! \n\n\n\nThe event takes place on an active farm and will feature 4 unique walking tours showcasing the following topics: \n\n\n\nPrairies\, pollinators\, and grassland birds (1 hr)\n\n\n\nInterested in restoring prairies and grasslands to support pollinators and wildlife habitat? This tour will discuss prairie strips\, cost-share programs that support prairie habitat\, management strategies for prairies – new and old\, and the benefits of prairies and grasslands for native bird populations. \n\n\n\nFarmland\, grazing\, and soil health (1 hr)\n\n\n\nWhether you farm or not\, agricultural acres are critical components of the landscape. Learn about the connection between soil health and water quality as we showcase a rainfall simulator\, cropland demonstration plots\, and an active cattle grazing operation. We’ll cover the basics of conservation agriculture and discuss ways non-operating landowners can work with farmers to implement conservation practices on their land. \n\n\n\nInvasive species and riparian areas (2 hr)\n\n\n\nInvasive species are pervasive in much of Wisconsin. This is a longer walk (approx. 1 mile) along pastures\, field edges\, and a riparian forest buffer. We will dive deep into the topic of invasive species management. We’ll also look at stream restoration and agroforestry opportunities in riparian areas (where land and surface waters meet). \n\n\n\nWoodland walk with a forester\n\n\n\n(Optional tour at second location on farm – 12:30pm start time) \n\n\n\nThe afternoon will feature a hike in the woods with a forester and natural resources professionals who work with private woodland owners. Reminder to bring your sack lunch\, water\, and hiking boots as the woodland walk will cover over 1 mile and last until approx. 2 PM. SUMMARY:Pasture Walk at Anathoth Community Farm
DESCRIPTION:Multi-Enterprise Pasture Walk – Luck\, Saturday\, July 19\, 10 AMThe NW Wisconsin Graziers Network and UW-Madison Extension invite you to a multi-enterprise pasture walk hosted by Anathoth Community Farm near Luck in Polk County on Saturday\, July 19 from 10:00AM-12Noon. This educational event will emphasize: managing pasture during weather extremes\, bee and pollinator habitat\, mitigating nuisance wildlife\, circling the wagons to survive global chaos\, multi-species direct marketing\, grazing for meat production\, regenerative agriculture and watershed protection.The Anathoth Community Farm is home to Mike Miles\, Barb Kass\, and their extended family. They raise fully pastured beef\, poultry\, and pork and do retail sales directly to customers. The farm consists of about 60 acres on gently rolling lighter soils with pastures and wooded areas. Using temporary polywire fencing and portable animal enclosures. Animals can be moved up to three times per day\, thereby creating better soil health\, water infiltration and diversified animal nutrition. Short term high stocking density grazing\, out-wintering beef cattle and bale grazing will be discussed along with answering any and all questions from pasture walk participants.The farm has established key-line swales to harvest melted snow and rain water run-off for more effective water utilization and watershed protection. The swale borders are planted with various woody perennials for fruit and nut production. Forages are grown in the alleys. Silvopasturing include both partial clearing for grazing and establishment of trees in existing pastures. \n\n\n\nAnathoth is community based which has been key to their longevity. Farm management is balanced with both education and advocacy. Thousands of visitors over the years have gained insights into best ecological practices both in farming and basic living skills. An active member in Wisconsin Farmers Union\, SCV Food Alliance\, and NWWGN\, Miles has seen the value of community in action. Now more than ever\, farmers and consumers are dependent on each other for rural economic and social enrichment and prosperity. \n\n\n\nThe farm is located at 740 Round Lake Road\, south of Hwy 48. From Luck\, take Hwy 48 east 8 miles\, turn right or south on Cty E\, drive about 2 miles\, then turn right on Round Lake Road. Drive about 2 miles to the farm. From Cumberland\, take Hwy 48 about 12 miles\, then turn left or south on Cty E.
